Triads are crucial to know. It doesn’t get much more fundamental than triads, but that doesn’t mean we can’t come up with some creative things to do with them. Here I explain what a triad is and then I show a Pat Metheny style phrase using those triads. The thought is to hopefully become inspired by these ideas and then try and create something of your own. Learning “licks” or taking ideas from another musician is completely fine, in fact, I encourage it and have been personally inspired to practice many more hours because of it. Being an individual and finding your own voice is extremely important in the world of improvisational music so please be patient and try your best to come up with your own ideas. Once you fully understand what a triad is and how they are built you will be well on your way to understanding 7th chords. Triads are the building blocks on which 7th chords are created so learn these first and you may be pleasantly surprised when you attempt to learn about 7th chords. I hope you enjoy it.
