I took this melody from the song “How deep is the ocean” off of Kurt’s album Intuit. We all at some point in time have to learn some “licks” and I’m always inspired when I hear Kurt Rosenwinkel play the guitar. I didn’t want to simply teach an idea that someone else created, so I’m hoping to explain where the idea came from and what scales and triads were used to create this great musical phrase. Lydian Dominant is a very common scale in the “Jazz Language” so I encourage you to spend some time not only with Kurt’s phrase but with the scale and triads that come out of the Lydian Dominant scale. I hope this lesson can shed some light on a very nice musical phrase from one of today’s most brilliant guitarists. Being an individual and finding your own voice is not an easy task, but it is extremely important in the world of improvisational music so please be patient and try your best to come up with your own ideas. I hope you enjoy this lesson inspired by the one and only Kurt Rosenwinkel.

Below is the YouTube video of the lesson.
